Quick Comparables: Benchmark Against Filed Peers Without Losing the Citations

Rexfin's /compare view puts two or three companies side by side on cited actuals and ratios, with mixed assurance, mixed currency, and unfiled metrics all labelled honestly.

By The Rexfin team

Benchmarking against peers usually means someone builds a spreadsheet by hand: pull a competitor’s numbers off a PDF, retype them next to yours, hope the periods line up, and never quite trust the result enough to send it anywhere important. Rexfin’s comparables view does the same job (your company against listed GCC peers, side by side, on a shared metric set), but every figure keeps the same trust chain it has everywhere else in the product: cited, drillable, and graded for how solid it actually is.

Picking a set and a metric group

Pick up to three companies as chips, then choose which metrics to show: headline actuals (revenue, profit, total assets), growth, margins, a library of financial ratios, or per-share figures. Rexfin builds a table with one column per company and one row per metric, plus a small trend chart per metric showing how each company moved over time. Every cell in the actuals rows cites its atom and opens the same provenance drawer you’d get from a single-company statement: source page, re-verified against the stored document hash.

Each company’s column can be set to a different basis (its latest annual filing, or any interim it has filed, reviewed figures included), which is what lets you compare a company’s most recent quarter against a peer’s most recent annual, honestly labelled as what each one is.

Where the comparison could go wrong, and doesn’t

A few things break a naive comparables table, and Rexfin builds around each one rather than papering over it.

Not every company filed the same metric. If one peer didn’t report a figure for the period you selected, that cell is an em-dash, never interpolated, never estimated to fill the row. A blank cell is more honest than a guessed one.

Assurance levels aren’t uniform. Comparing an audited annual figure against a peer’s reviewed interim number means the row as a whole is only as solid as its weakest input, so Rexfin labels the whole row by the weakest assurance grade actually present in it: audited stays green, a row touched by a reviewed interim turns slate-blue, and the chrome never relies on color alone to say so.

Interim periods distort ratios that assume a full year. Annualizing a six-month working-capital or turnover ratio, or dividing a half-year flow by a period-end balance, produces a number that reads like an annual ratio but isn’t one. Rather than show a distorted figure, Rexfin drops that specific metric to an em-dash for that column and reverts the row’s grade to whatever the remaining, undistorted columns support. Margins, liquidity, leverage and cited per-share figures stay, because those hold up regardless of period length. See quarterly, interim and TTM views for how that period logic works underneath.

Currency isn’t uniform across the GCC. A Saudi riyal filer next to a UAE dirham filer means absolute figures (revenue, profit, assets, per-share) get a currency badge per column and a flag on any row mixing currencies, rather than a silent conversion. Unitless metrics like margins stay directly comparable. The full mechanics are in multi-currency statements.

The “vs peers” module

Every company dashboard also carries a smaller “vs peers” panel that ranks the company against whatever peer set is loaded, on headline metrics only, with an honest denominator: “#2 of 3” means three companies actually filed that metric, not that three were loaded in total. Each ranked figure drills the same way a comparables cell does, and a “Compare all” link takes you to the full side-by-side view.

Who this is for

This is built for anyone who needs a peer number and can’t afford for it to be quietly wrong: a CFO benchmarking margins against listed competitors before a board conversation, an analyst screening a sector, a lender sanity-checking a covenant ratio against comparable filers. If you only ever look at one company at a time, you won’t need this screen. The moment you’re asked “how do we compare,” it’s the difference between a table you can defend line by line and one you hope nobody checks.
